Hip and Elbow Scores Before a Labrador Puppy

What OFA grades and PennHIP distraction indexes say about a Labrador sire and dam, what they cannot promise, and what to ask before a deposit.

What OFA hip grades mean

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals grades hip radiographs on a seven point scale: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, Severe. A dog must be at least 24 months old to receive a permanent grade. Excellent and Good describe hips with tight fit and no radiographic sign of dysplasia. Fair is still within the normal range but with minor variation. Borderline means the radiologist could not call it either way. Mild, Moderate and Severe are dysplastic.

Elbows use a different scale. The OFA reads elbow films as Normal, or as Grade I, II or III for degenerative joint disease. A Normal elbow clearance is the number that matters most to a Labrador owner, because elbow dysplasia shows up earlier and often hurts more than hip looseness.

The grade is a snapshot of one day. It is not a prediction of the dog's working life, and it is not a guarantee for the litter. Two Good hips can produce a dysplastic puppy. That is the part breeders tend to leave out.

Is PennHIP better than OFA?

Neither test is better. They measure different things.

PennHIP takes three radiographs and reports a distraction index, or DI, for each hip. The DI is a number between 0 and 1. It measures how far the femoral head can be pulled out of the socket under stress. A lower number means a tighter hip. A DI of 0.30 is often cited as a threshold, with values under 0.30 considered tight and values above 0.70 carrying high risk. PennHIP can be done as early as 16 weeks, which lets a breeder evaluate a dog before it is bred.

OFA gives a single word. PennHIP gives a continuous number. A dog with an OFA Good and a DI of 0.55 is not the same animal as a dog with an OFA Good and a DI of 0.25, even though both carry the same word on paper.

For a Labrador buyer, the practical difference is this: PennHIP tells you more about the parents' actual hip tightness, and it can be done young. OFA tells you whether the dog cleared the standard at two years, and it is the number most American breeders put in an ad. Ask for both when both exist.

The same logic applies across breeds, including the giant ones. A Great Dane breeder faces the same hip question with a heavier dog and a shorter expected lifespan, and the screening principles do not change. What should a breeder show before the deposit?

Ask for four documents. Not a promise, not a verbal report, not a photo of a certificate on a phone.

  1. OFA or PennHIP results for the dam, with the dog's registered name and number visible.
  2. OFA or PennHIP results for the sire, same standard.
  3. Elbow clearances for both, since elbows are graded separately from hips.
  4. The registration numbers, so you can look the results up yourself in the OFA database.

If the breeder says the sire is "clear" but has no number, that is not a clearance. If the dam is under two years old and has no OFA grade, ask whether a PennHIP was done. If neither exists, you are buying a puppy on hope.

A deposit is not a contract for a healthy dog. It is a contract for a puppy. The health paperwork is what tells you how much risk you are taking on.

What the scores cannot promise

Hip and elbow scores describe the parents. They do not describe the puppy.

Genetics for hip dysplasia are polygenic, which means many genes each contribute a small amount, and environment pulls the result in either direction. A puppy from two Excellent parents can still develop dysplasia if it is overfed, exercised too hard on hard surfaces before growth plates close, or kept too heavy through the first year. A puppy from two Fair parents can grow up sound with careful feeding and moderate exercise.

The score also says nothing about the other joints. Osteochondrosis, cruciate rupture and panosteitis all appear in Labradors and none of them show up on a hip radiograph.

What the scores do is shift the odds. A litter from two tight hipped parents has a lower chance of dysplastic puppies than a litter from two loose hipped parents. Lower is not zero. That is the honest reading.

Reading a pedigree with numbers

A pedigree full of champions tells you about conformation. It does not tell you about hips unless the numbers are printed next to the names.

Look for a pattern. If the sire, the dam, and the four grandparents all carry OFA Good or Excellent, the line has been selected for tight hips for at least two generations. If one grandparent is listed as Mild, ask how old that dog was when it was graded and whether it was ever bred again.

Ask about littermates. A dam with an Excellent grade whose three sisters are all dysplastic is a different bet than a dam with an Excellent grade from a litter of six where five are cleared. Litter data is harder to get, but a breeder who tracks it is a breeder who is paying attention.

Ask when the dogs were radiographed. A dog graded at 24 months is not the same as a dog graded at 48 months. Early grades can change. A breeder who re radiographs before breeding is doing more than the minimum.

Elbows deserve their own question

Hip scores get all the attention. Elbows cause more lameness in working Labradors.

Elbow dysplasia covers several conditions: fragmented coronoid process, ununited anconeal process, osteochondrosis of the medial humeral condyle, and incongruity of the joint. The OFA grades elbows from Normal to Grade III. A dog with Grade I elbows can still work, but it will likely need management later.

Ask for elbow clearances on both parents. Ask whether any littermate has been treated for elbow problems. Ask whether the breeder has had a dog with a fragmented coronoid process, because that condition is strongly inherited and a breeder who has seen it will usually talk about it.

A hip clearance without an elbow clearance is half the paperwork.

The two year rule and why it exists

OFA will not issue a permanent hip grade before 24 months because the hip joint is still remodeling. A dog that looks loose at 12 months may tighten by 24. A dog that looks tight at 12 months may loosen.

PennHIP works earlier because it measures distraction under stress, which is a mechanical property rather than a developmental one. That is why a 16 week PennHIP is useful for a breeder planning a breeding, and why it is not a substitute for a two year OFA grade in a buyer's mind.

If a breeder offers a puppy from a dam with only a preliminary OFA at 18 months, ask for the final grade when it comes. If the breeder will not share it, that tells you something.

What to do with the numbers

Get the numbers. Write them down. Look them up in the OFA database yourself. Compare the sire and dam on the same scale, not one OFA and one PennHIP unless you understand both.

Then accept the limit. No score removes risk. It only tells you how much the breeder has already done to reduce it.

A Labrador that will hunt pheasants in December, swim in cold water, and live in the house for twelve years is worth more than a piece of paper. But the paper is where the conversation starts, and a breeder who has it ready before you ask is a breeder who has been through this before.
